Black contact lenses for Halloween or to scare your friends are just a click away online.

Special effects contact lenses have been used in the movies and in theater for many years and are now available to the public online.

There are many different styles to choose from but among the most popular are the pitch-black lenses. This lens is great for creating that vampire, zombie or possessed look and will be great at Halloween parties as well as terrifying unsuspecting friends, family and strangers after Halloween.

These lenses block all of the color of your own eye making your eyes look completely black. Since the lens is tinted, wearing them is like wearing sunglasses so it will be difficult to see properly especially in the dark. You may need help from a friend to get around and to stay safe. And, you should never drive at anytime, even in the daylight wearing these lenses.

Wearing Black Contacts For The First Time

When you first put on your new lenses, after washing your hands, thoroughly clean each lens with a good lens cleaner several times. Then use a good wearing solution when you put them in. If you have never worn contacts, it might be a good idea to have a friend who is an experienced contact wearer to help you put them in.

You can also get lenses that cover the whole eye, called sclareal lenses. These lenses are about 1/3 again the size of regular contact lenses. If you aren’t used to wearing contacts, they may be very uncomfortable. In addition, these lenses need to be fitted to your eye and will require eye measurements by an optometrist.

You may find that unless you have the right size for your eye the sclareal lenses may not fit. That would be disappointing after spending all that money. So when you buy sclareal lenses, only buy from a store that asks for your eyeball measurements. Measurements determine the correct size, shape and strength you need. In fact, US law requires that all contact lenses even non-corrective lenses need a contact lens prescription.

Caring for Specialty Lenses

Special effect contacts are not like regular contacts and as such should be treated differently. So that your lenses stay in good condition and to protect your eyes, follow these guidelines:

  1. Do not wear special effect contacts overnight or for extended periods of time.
  2. You should never share contact with your friends since you will be transferring bacteria with the lens, which could lead to severe eye infections.
  3. Keep your lenses in a lens case in a good quality lens storage solution. Change the solution each time you put your lenses away. And clean the lenses before and after each use.
  4. If you don’t wear your lenses every day change the solution 2 or 3 times per week so it stays fresh and continues to disinfect your lenses. Old stale solution will become infected with bacteria and make your lenses unsafe to wear.
  5. If your eyes feel irritated or are red, take out the lenses immediately.
  6. Call your optometrist if you notice any problems with your eyes after wearing your lenses. Take the health of your eyes seriously.
  7. Remember to protect your eyes above all else.

Special Effect Contacts and especially Black contacts will be very popular at Halloween. But you may also consider wearing them to your favorite vampire movie premiere or just out and about with friends. Remember though to not drive with them on. It might be fun to see the reaction of store clerks or people on the street when you have pitch black eyes. You might even want to add some pasty looking white makeup to your face for an even better “undead” look.

The least expensive price for the kind that just covers your iris (the colored part of the eye) is around $35.00 per lens. The price for sclera contacts where they cover most of the white of the eye is $145 a pair.

You can buy them from your optician or you can order them online. You can get them in both prescription or corrective lenses and non-prescription.  If you don’t wear glasses or contacts, you will obviously want to buy the plano lenses which have zero power and are non-corrective. Of course, the prescription contacts cost more.

If you buy contact lenses online, plano lenses can be shipped immediately while prescription lenses are shipped after being verified by your optometrist.

Since you have no idea if they will fit your eye, you may want to check with friends or in forums about how well a certain brand fits and feels in the eye. When you receive your lenses, check out the packaging for any defects since once you break the seal and open them, they cannot be returned. And some online sellers have a no return policy.

Be sure to buy contacts from reputable sellers. That probably means you may have to pay more for a good pair, but it will be worth it to keep your eyes safe. Plus, usually more expensive products are of a higher quality and last longer.
